Tooth-Coloured Fillings

A reliable, durable and aesthetic repair

Having a tooth filled is an incredibly common dental procedure, treating dental cavities and damage. Tooth coloured composite fillings offer an aesthetic repair, rebuilding teeth and restoring them back to full functionality. Dental composite is a type of resin made from a mixture of glass and plastic which, when hardened, looks just like dental enamel. It can be colour-matched to blend in perfectly with the natural tooth and appear as if the damage was never present at all.

Why have tooth coloured fillings?

  • They blend in beautifully with your natural teeth
  • Modern materials make them a durable choice
  • Less of the tooth needs to be removed before placement of the filling
  • They can restore decayed, chipped, worn or broken teeth

What is involved in having a tooth coloured filling?

A tooth coloured filling is a fairly straightforward procedure, taking place in a single short appointment at the practice.

Firstly, the area to be treated is numbed with a local anaesthetic to minimise your discomfort. We remove the decayed part of the tooth and carefully dry the remaining healthy structure.

We apply a special acidic gel to the tooth, creating tiny holes and a rough surface to ensure the composite material will bond effectively and form a strong hold.

We colour match the composite material to your natural tooth shade and apply it in layers directly onto your tooth. We mould it to form the desired shape of the tooth and add bite contours to create a seamless blend with the rest of your teeth.

The composite is hardened with a UV light, and sets immediately. As a final touch, we professionally polish your filling to leave it looking smooth and natural.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • How do I look after my tooth coloured filling?

To prevent decay forming around the composite filling, it is important to brush at least twice a day and see your dentist for regular check-ups.

  • Can my composite filling be repaired?

Yes, if a composite filling gets damaged or chipped, it can very easily be repaired in a single visit to the practice. As the composite material can bond to itself as well as tooth enamel, we can simply add some more to fix small chips in your filling. If a larger area of damage is present, we may choose to remove the whole filling and replace it, but this can still be achieved in one appointment.

  • How long will my tooth coloured filling take to set?

Your tooth coloured filling is hardened using a UV light during treatment, and sets immediately. It will have full function from the moment you leave the dental surgery, although you may naturally choose to eat on the other side of your mouth for the rest of the day.

  • Can I have tooth coloured fillings instead of silver amalgam ones?

Yes, we can replace old silver amalgam fillings with much more aesthetically pleasing white composite. If you are looking for a more aesthetic option, we can remove the amalgam and replace it with composite on the same day.
