Why do I need to see the hygienist?

Our qualified and experienced hygienists have undergone years of training in oral health, and are best placed to look after your teeth and gums. Although your brushing and flossing routine at home does a lot to remove plaque and bacteria from your teeth and gums, your hygienist can professionally clean away build ups and access areas you can’t reach with a standard toothbrush.

Dental hygiene focuses on preventing gum disease and decay. The symptoms of gum disease can be mild, so it is often overlooked. If left untreated, it causes redness, inflammation and can lead to receding gums and eventually tooth loss. Dental hygienists are trained in spotting the signs, allowing us to catch and treat gum disease before it can worsen.

What do dental hygiene appointments involve?

To begin, we ask you a little bit about your oral and general health, your brushing and flossing routine at home and give you the chance to talk to us about any concerns you have.

The main part of your appointment is a professional deep clean. We carefully remove plaque and stubborn tartar from even the hard to reach areas of your mouth, protecting your teeth from bacteria. We then polish your teeth, leaving them feeling clean, smooth and bright.

If necessary, we give you some advice on how to improve the way you clean your teeth at home, including using interdental brushes to reach between your teeth and keep up with the hard work at home.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Does dental hygiene treatment hurt?

You may find dental hygiene treatment uncomfortable, especially during the deep clean, but often the anticipation of going to your hygiene appointment is much worse than the actual thing. We ensure you are feeling calm and relaxed before we begin, and encourage you to tell us if you are particularly worried or nervous so we can help make the experience a positive one for you.

  • Can my hygienist whiten my teeth?

It is not the aim of a hygiene appointment to whiten your teeth, but you may find that they appear a lot whiter and brighter once they have been professionally cleaned, with plaque and tartar deposits removed. If you are interested in whitening treatment, please contact us for more information.

  • How often should I visit my hygienist?

The length of time you should leave between hygiene appointments depends on your individual case. In general, we suggest a hygiene appointment every six months is a good way to protect your oral health, in line with your dental check up, but some patients will be advised to leave a longer or shorter interval between appointments. If you have any questions, please do ask.

  • How long will my hygiene appointment last?

A hygiene appointment will last around 30-40 minutes in total, giving the hygienist enough time to thoroughly clean away plaque and tartar and give you some professional advice, if necessary.
