Inlays & Onlays

A long lasting way to restore large areas of damage

Inlays and onlays can be used to restore areas of decay or damage that are too extensive to be treated with a normal filling, and can provide a less invasive, more affordable alternative to a crown. They are usually placed in teeth at the back of the mouth or can be used to repair large areas on the front teeth. An inlay is cemented within the tooth cavity and an onlay covers the biting surface of the tooth for a full repair.

Why have an inlay or onlay?

What does the treatment for inlays or onlays involve?

We begin by removing areas of decay or old fillings and the tooth is carefully cleaned.

We take impressions of your tooth, which are used by a dental laboratory to create the inlay or onlay so it will accurately and precisely match the area to be filled.

A temporary restoration is fitted so the prepared cavity can be protected while the inlay or onlay is being created.

When it is ready, the inlay or onlay is checked for fit and comfort before we fix it permanently in place with a strong dental adhesive.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • How do I look after my inlay or onlay?

Inlays and onlays can be easier to keep clean than other dental restoration, but do require care to ensure they remain problem free. The best way to look after them is to keep up with a regular brushing and flossing routine at home, and make sure you visit your dentist for check up appointments so they can keep an eye on your restoration.

  • How long do inlays and onlays last?

When properly maintained, with effective cleaning and regular check-ups, inlays and onlays can last for years without needing to be repaired or replaced.

  • Why do I need an inlay or onlay rather than a standard filling?

Inlays and onlays are similar to fillings, but are used to restore much larger areas of damage and create a seamless repair. Inlays work in the same way as a filling, as they are placed within the tooth, but are stronger, and more durable. Onlays can also be used as a more affordable alternative to a crown.
